Mazda 2 Extreme - Rally Ready (AU)

Australians bought over one million cars last year which is impressive considering there are only around twenty million people occupying its shores. Nevertheless, it is home to a truly unique motor industry that mass produces indigenous vehicles that are not seen in many parts of the world. But it is not just mass produced vehicles that attract the attention, the Australian car industry is not unfamiliar with producing bespoke custom designs as well.

Take this Mazda 2 that you see before you. Hiding behind four rather large Hella spotlights is a Mazda 2 with a difference. The car is the latest in a long line of customised Mazda models that have been given the “Extreme” make over by Mazda Motorsport Australia. This is the second Mazda 2 that has received a thorough customizing as back in 2005, an older model “2” was the benefactor of such treatment. This little Mazda clearly has a rallying theme behind its inspiration and the modifications run further than skin deep.

Mazda have said their goal is to increase the cars real world performance by 20%. This could mean a number of things and does not necessarily gift the little car a 20% power hike. Mazda have not quoted figures but they are currently working on the engine so we can expect some improvements over the standard cars 76kW and 137Nm outputs.

The suspension has been fully reworked by Murray Coote who is renowned for developing some of the best suspension systems fitted to modern rally cars. The suspension works through a set of 15 inch Compomotive alloys shod with Bridgestone Potenza tyres. The interior is “stage” ready and is equipped with a roll cage, full five point harnesses, fire extinguisher and the obligatory hydraulic handbrake. There is no sign yet if Mazda Australia will run the car competitively.

Other “Extreme” models include the 2004 RX-8 and the 2007 Mazda 3 MPS Extreme.

Mazda at 2008 Melbourne Motor Show: Mazda's Baby Car Gets An Extreme Makeover
Mazda has today unveiled the fourth in its iconic series of extreme makeovers, a rally-ready Mazda2 Extreme, at the 2008 Melbourne Motor Show.
The Mazda2 Extreme was borne of a simple idea: Take one of Australia's most popular lightweight hatchbacks with a proven pedigree as the driver's choice, add a sizeable dose of adrenalin, pump it full of steroids and ... watch out.
The Mazda2 Extreme is the fourth in a stellar line of extreme Mazdas produced by Mazda Motorsport in Australia. It follows in the tyre tracks of the Mazda RX-8 (2004), the original Mazda2 Extreme (2005) and the Mazda3 MPS (2007).
The second-generation Mazda2 has been a runaway success for Mazda since its launch in September 2007, with more than 7,000 sales in just six full months. The Mazda2 Extreme builds on the unchallenged driver's car reputation of this popular five-door hatchback, taking it to a new level of exhilaration.
The engine is still under development however Mazda Motorsport's goal is to increase the car's real world performance by at least 20 percent. A three-inch sports exhaust helps airflow from the engine and will ensure the Mazda2 Extreme has the raucous soundtrack it deserves. The standard car's five-speed manual transmission is unchanged, and, like the production version it is based on, drive is delivered to the ground through the front wheels.
The car's suspension system has been redesigned by Australian suspension tuning expert, Murray Coote, renowned for his work on some of the world's leading rally and racing cars.
Coote configured a suspension package that tailors the Mazda2's competent on-road skills for the dirt-road intensity of rally competition. Sports-tuned springs and shock absorbers team with purpose-built 15-inch Bridgestone Potenza rally tyres and lightweight Compomotive Motorsport alloy wheels.
The Mazda2 Extreme stands out visually with a striking blue, white and yellow paint scheme that epitomises Mazda's Zoom-Zoom DNA. Black flared wheel arches give the car a more aggressive stance, while four-spot Hella rally lights ensure this is one machine that can see in the dark.
The Mazda2 Extreme's cabin has been prepared for battle; a full PCD roll cage has been installed and the standard Mazda2 front seats replaced with Italian Sabelt race seats each equipped with five-point safety harness. A Momo steering wheel, hydraulic handbrake, fire extinguisher and medical kit complete the internal makeover.
In its current form the Mazda2 Extreme retains its standard braking system. This includes antilock brakes with emergency brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution.
The end result is a Mazda2 like no other; a Mazda2 Extreme ready to rally.
"This was a surprisingly challenging Extreme car to do," said Mazda Motorsport chief Allan Horsley. "Starting with such an agile car really put the pressure on when it came to improving its real-world abilities."
"I think the result was well worth the effort. This Mazda2 Extreme sits proudly alongside our other Extreme cars like the RX-8 and Mazda3 MPS."
Commenting on the Mazda2 Extreme, Mazda Australia's managing director Doug Dickson said: "Mazda Australia, under the direction of Allan Horsley, has an excellent reputation for pushing the envelope in the design and modification of cars."
"It seemed an obvious decision to unleash the Extreme beast lurking within our Mazda2 five-door hatchback. The Mazda2's popularity with Australian buyers is at an all-time high. This award-winning light car is selling far above our expectations because it looks good, it represents great value for money, and it's an enjoyable car to drive."

Lexus RX Gets New Entertainment System in UK

Lexus must have been receiving quite a few complaints. Owners are being irritated by their kids that are too noisy when sitting in the back of their Lexus RX luxury crossover. It seems that due to the Lexus being so hushed in operation, the noise of the kids having a riot in the back seat is being exacerbated.

Rather than take the kids to behaviour school, Lexus have given Mum and Dad the option of fitting their new In Car Entertainment system. Lexus claims the new system “delivers better quality, improved performance and even greater versatility, but at no extra cost compared to the current system”. Mum and Dad say “but will it keep them occupied and shut them up?”. It would seem a question that would be a little hard to answer so Lexus are giving no guarantees but they do state that “The system is compatible with Region 2 DVD, CD, USB 2.0 and SD Card media. Compatible formats are DVD playback 4.3 and 1.69, MPEG2, MPEG 4, DivX, MP3 CD, MP3 DVD, photo CD JPEG, DVD video, Video CD (VCD) and Super Video CD (SVCD).” This should keep the most ardent techno whiz kid occupied and there are even some RCA jacks to plug in a games console, although we are unsure if they are anti-lollypop proof. Some new infra red head phones keep the noise down for the parents.

The new system has two slim tablet like screens which Lexus says are smaller than the old ones and are foldable for easy storage। Reception is better and the units are more resistant to screen jitter when the RX is travelling over rough surfaces. Lexus doesn’t claim any major improvement with regards to Anti-Sticky-Finger-Screen-Smudging though. They must still be working on ASFSS technology. Nevertheless, even at a whopping £2,200 sterling, I am sure there will be plenty of near deaf parents out there that will be willing to pay.

Lexus RX Gets New Entertainment System in UK

Lexus raises in-car entertainment to a new level with the introduction of an advanced new premium ICE package for the RX luxury SUV. It delivers better quality, improved performance and even greater versatility, but at no extra cost compared to the current system.

The new premium ICE comprises two slim tablet units, securely mounted on the back of the front seats. Each features an eight-inch WVGA screen with an integrated side loading DVD player and USB 2.0 and SD Card readers. The units are resistant to screen jitter when travelling over uneven surfaces and their larger screen size gives a wider viewing angle.

Two pairs of infrared headphones are provided, which are about 20 per cent smaller than before, making them easier for children to use. They are now foldable for easy storage. Reception has been sharpened and there is an auto power-off function. Each tablet has a manual control panel, or a remote control unit can be used, redesigned for a superior tactile quality and ease of use.

The tablets have RCA inputs for connecting compatible games consoles and a stereo 23.5mm jack point. The screens can be operated together or independently, should passengers choose to enjoy the same playback or their own choice of video, music or gaming.

The system is compatible with Region 2 DVD, CD, USB 2.0 and SD Card media. Compatible formats are DVD playback 4.3 and 1.69, MPEG2, MPEG 4, DivX, MP3 CD, MP3 DVD, photo CD JPEG, DVD video, Video CD (VCD) and Super Video CD (SVCD).

The premium ICE package, available to order now, is provided as standard on SE-L versions of the RX 350 and RX 400h. It is offered as an option on all other grades, priced £2,200.

Mitsubishi Panther Styling Concepts

First shown at the Australian motor show in October 2007, these styling concepts from Mitsubishi Australia actually show some of the accessories that are now available from Mitsubishi Australia Dealers.

Mitsubishi have been in the Australian press for all the wrong reasons of late. Recently they have just pulled their manufacturing operations in Australia which means they will no longer build their Mitsubishi 380 V6 sedan. To try and win the Aussie buying public over once again, Mitsubishi are showcasing their “Panther” concepts.

All the vehicles are all painted in, of course, black. Firstly there is the little Colt hatch with its funky body kit and 16-inch alloy wheels, probably the most successful looking car to receive the makeover. Next in line for the Panther treatment is the Lancer sedan which has huge 20-inch blinged up chrome wheels.

The four wheel drives in the range also get fully blinged up to the hilt with ridiculous 22-inch American style chrome wheels. The Pajero/Shogun off-roader also gets a lowered ride height, custom body kit, illuminated scuff panels and a chrome exhaust tip. The Triton Pick-up adds a hard tonneau cover and front and rear lamp bezels, in chrome of course.

Even the Grandis People carrier gets the treatment so mum can look the business on the school run.

It all makes for a chintzy, blinged up range of cars that offer much style over little substance. The only thing that is lacking now is the 22-inch sub woofer!

Alfa Junior Furiosa Latest Spy Photos Plus Interior Shot

Coming off of the first prototype shots just over a week ago in Torino, here are the latest shots of the new Alfa Romeo Furiosa taken just this morning in northern Scandinavia. Despite the frigid temperatures, the effort put in by the photographer proved fruitful as he managed to capture first photo of the Furiosa's interior.

Scheduled to hit dealers in autumn of this year, the two-door hatchback is intended to do battle with serious competitors such as MINI and the up-coming Audi A1. Partly based on the Fiat Punto, we reckon the Alfa Furiosa will be the more attractive and exciting car which also explains Turin’s plan to employ the higher-level engines of the Punto-range with outputs between 120 and 227 bhp plus powerful diesel units. Additionally, adopting design cues from the Alfa 8C as seen in the headlamps and tailamps also help position it a notch higher. Being considerably shorter than the new Alfa 149, the new Furiosa could become an excitingly sporty hatch for the city. » Full text »

Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion

Economy: Passat BlueMotion is satisfied with 5.1 liters diesel per 100 kilometers

Low emissions: 136 g/km CO2 sets a top value among the mid-class cars

Wolfsburg, 06 March 2007 - World premiere for one of the most economical mid-class cars of our time: The Passat BlueMotion. Volkswagen is presenting this new model at the 77th Geneva Motor Show. The Passat BlueMotion, powered by a TDI engine rated at 77 kW / 105 PS, breaks through the magical fuel consumption barrier of 5.5 liters for its class, as sedan and Variant. The sedan consumes just 5.1 liters diesel per 100 kilometers, and the Variant just 5.2 liters. And that represents an improvement of 0.7 liters for the Variant and 0.6 liters for the sedan. The Passat BlueMotion will be introduced in Europe early this summer.

Clean: CO2 emissions significantly reduced

Paired with its low fuel consumption values are CO2 emission reductions of 15 g/km for the sedan and 19 g/km for the Variant. Total emissions of 136 g/km and 137 g/km (Variant) are a testimony to the innovative potential of the Volkswagen TDI engines. In addition, a particulate filter is integrated in the emissions control system as standard equipment.

Fast: Additional five km/h top speed as side effect

Fuel economy and CO2 data are all the more impressive, because the Passat, at a length of 4.77 meters, is among the largest vehicles in its segment. An interesting side benefit: Its aerodynamic refinements and longer gearing have increased its top speed by five km/h. The sedan tops out at 193 km/h, and the Variant reaches 190 km/h.

Economical: Passat BlueMotion reduces costs

The Passat BlueMotion not only protects the environment and energy resources; it also protects the car owner’s budget. At an average annual driving distance of 15,000 kilometers, fuel costs are just 68 Euros* per month due to the car’s excellent fuel economy. A pleasant side benefit: sedan and Variant have theoretical ranges of about 1,350 on a single tank of fuel! And that translates to just eleven fill ups per year at 15,000 kilometers.

Aerodynamic: Body fine tuning reduces air resistance

The excellent fuel economy and emission values were achieved by continuous fine tuning of the drivetrain, chassis and car body. An example in the area of aerodynamics: The radiator grille trim was modified, and the underbody was skirted. Modifications have improved air resistance values (cW x A) by 12.2 percent for the sedan (12.5 percent for Variant) to 0.617 and 0.629 (Variant).

Lowered: Lower chassis also optimizes air resistance

A number of effective changes were also made to the chassis. A careful look at the car reveals that the Passat BlueMotion "stands" somewhat lower in the wheel housings than the base version; this was done for better aerodynamics, and indeed it has been lowered 15 millimeters in front and eight millimeters in the rear. The lowest possible rolling resistance is guaranteed by high-tech tires ("best-in-class energy tires") sized 205/55 R16 91H with tire pressure increased by 0.4 bar in part-load operation.

Innovative: Engine helps driver in gear selection

The 1.9 TDI of the Passat BlueMotion (77 kW / 105 PS at 4,000 rpm) develops a maximum torque of 250 Newton-meter (starting at 1,900 rpm). Its notable fuel efficiency was achieved by tuning a wide variety of parameters on the four-cylinder, direct injection turbo-diesel engine. A software modification to the engine controller allowed development engineers to reduce idling speed, for example. The TDI’s engine controller also outputs a "gear recommendation" to the "Multifunctional Display Plus". There the driver can read off which of a total of five forward gears is the ideal gear at any given time.

Program: BlueMotion is more than a vehicle name

In the summer of 2006 Volkswagen presented its first model under the new BlueMotion label: The Polo BlueMotion. Power: 59 kW / 80 PS. Fuel consumption: 3.9 liters diesel per 100 kilometers. CO2 emissions: 102 g/km. But the name BlueMotion not only refers to the automobile, rather it applies to the entire brand. "Blue", the Volkswagen color, stands for the elements to be protected: Water and air. "Motion" embodies the aspect of forward-looking mobility directed toward the future. BlueMotion is advancing to become a quality seal that stands for economy without compromises in driving fun.

Golf TDI Hybrid, Passat TSI ecoFuel and others for Geneva

In addition to the eye-opening retro-sports car Scirocco, Volkswagen’s stand at Geneva will be brimming over with talent specifically geared towards preserving the earth for future generations. Leading this charge, so to speak, is the Golf TDI Hybrid. Hybrid technology has come a long way since the days of Prius 1 and TDI Hybrid is one of the future technologies that have been waited on. Using a 7-speed DSG cog, this Golf is said to use only 3.4 litres per 100km in diesel, giving it a range well over 1000km on a tank.

The Golf TDI Hybrid will run on both electric power and diesel, and a combination of both. Similar to other hybrid models it sips on diesel when in highway cruise mode where speed and torque are in high demand. Enter city driving mode and the electric motor takes over the reigns, supplying force towards the front wheels. In this mode the car emits no harmful CO2. City dwellers who get behind the TDI Hybrid will have to find reasons to drive their cars so as to use up all their fuel. Estimated dates of availability should only be announced at the show itself.
Sharan, the 2.5 tonne MPV now receives treatment in BlueMotion packages that is designed to reduce fuel usage while providing decent levels of power. So BlueMotion leaves the Sharan with an average of 6.2 litres per 100km in fuel consumption, very good for a vehicle of its size.

As gas becomes safer, more important in fueling motor vehicles, Passat TSI EcoFuel, seen here in Estate guise, will be one of the pioneering vehicles in markets around the world. The 110kW Passat takes natural gas in its tank, and returns 5.2 kilograms of gas per 100km. I guess if VW has its way, such measurements will, in future, become the norm.

Lastly VW has the Golf Estate with 4Motion, which is VW’s permanent 4WD system that can transfer up to 100 percent of power sent to the back wheels when needed. We aren’t too sure how this would compare to an A4 allroad for example, but we suspect the differences could be chalk and cheese.

Press Release

With its Golf TDI Hybrid, Volkswagen demonstrates the kind of potential inherent in the combination of high-tech diesel engine, electric motor and 7-speed DSG technology. Exhibited for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show, the concept car consumes no more than 3.4 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres. This powerful full-hybrid Golf TDI Hybrid can be operated either in internal-combustion mode only or in a combination mode of powerful yet thrifty TDI and electric motor. The car is also designed to run on emissions-free electric power only. Power transmission to the front axle is managed by 7-speed DSG technology. In city traffic, the vehicle’s automatic stop-start system will even automatically switch off diesel operations.

The Passat Estate TSI EcoFuel being premiered in Geneva marks the beginning of a new era for natural-gas-fuelled automobiles. Until now, passenger cars operated using eco-friendly, low-consumption natural gas have tended to be "mild mannered". The Passat changes that once and for all with its 110-kW / 150-PS TSI engines. And yet the direct-injection turbo engine in the Passat, specifically designed to run on natural gas, consumes no more than 5.2 kilograms of gas per 100 kilometres. The Passat and the Passat Estate TSI EcoFuel are due to be launched on the market around year-end.

Volkswagen is continuing its BlueMotion campaign in 2008. The latest model in the series is the Sharan BlueMotion on display for the first time at the Geneva show. With an extremely low average fuel consumption of 6.2 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, the Sharan BlueMotion uses 0.7 of a litre less than "conventional" models. By the same token, CO2 emissions are reduced from 177 g/km to 159 g/km. These are first-rate values for a seven-seat van with up to 2,610 litres of cargo volume and a permissible gross vehicle weight of 2,510 kilograms. This Volkswagen is driven by a 103-kW / 140-PS TDI engine complete with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The BlueMotion option is available in combination with the Trendline and Comfortline fittings packages. Deliveries of the vehicle are scheduled to commence this summer.

Effective immediately, Volkswagen will be offering the Golf Estate in a version with permanent four-wheel drive. This automobile is designed to enable as much as 100 per cent of the vehicle’s tractive force to be transmitted to the rear wheels if so required in extreme circumstances. Thus, the Golf Estate TDI 4Motion offers the best possible grip even in the most adverse conditions. The 4Motion system is coupled with a fuel-efficient, high-torque TDI engine with 77 KW / 105 PS. The Golf Estate TDI 4Motion accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.9 seconds, has a top speed of 185 km/h and consumes just 6.0 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres. One attribute which is bound to be particularly attractive to outfit drivers is that the Golf Estate TDI 4Motion is permitted to tow as much as 1,500 kilograms on gradients of up to twelve per cent – that’s 100 kilograms more than its front-wheel-drive counterpart.
